Oscar The Grouch Lunch
April 27, 2012
Today I had an avocado to use so I wracked my brain for something fun and green and came up with Oscar The Grouch
I used an Elmo cookie cutter to cut out a piece of toast then spread it with mashed up avocado mixed with salt and natural preservative (essentially, powdered vitamin c). The can is just an avocado sandwich.
Oscar does look awfully happy. I think its because he has his string cheese and cheese curls worms (Slimey is the one with eyes), stinky smelly green fish (hard-boiled egg dyed with natural food dye and put in an egg mold) and a messy pile of fruit (pineapple and strawberries). Unfortunately, Cora did not carry the lunch flat so Oscar got mangled and she really didn’t want to eat the resultant mess. Note to self, no open-faced sandwiches for awhile!

Giggly Lunch
April 25, 2012
I am officially obsessed with working out a ‘recipe’ for manga-like eyes! This giggling cutie is yet another cheese sandwich decorated with cheese and fruit leather
I also experimented with using silicone molds to make egg white shapes. They turned out great! I sprayed the mold with oil, poured in some egg whites and popped it in the oven for about 15 minutes on 325. The consistency is so smooth and the egg really picked up the details of the mold. I suspect I am about to start collecting molds now, we might need to build a second garage to house all my bento supplies!
I finished the lunch with organic baked cheese curls and butterfly watermelon and strawberry cutouts.

Dance of the Butterflies
April 23, 2012
I received a new how to draw manga book this week and am having a blast thinking through the characters and how to translate them to food. I’m still stuck on eyes. I might need to do a study of cartoon eyes in food!
Cheese sandwiches assembled into a dancing cutie, decorated with cheese and fruit leather.
I finished the lunch with hummus butterflies, cucumber and carrot sticks for dipping and fruit.

Super Tree Hugger Earth Day Lunch
April 21, 2012
Cora loved our Tree Hugger cutie from the other day, so I tried to turn her into a super hero

Our super hero cutie is a cheese sandwich decorated with fruit leather and more cheese. The Earth in the distance is a smushed up piece of bread. Super Tree Hugger needs some work, her eyes are kinda freaky.
The lunch is finished off with hummus and whole wheat pretzels, star fruit salad and berries and coconut yogurt for dipping.

Save the Whale Earth Day Lunch
April 19, 2012
Cora was so excited by the Earth Day theme yesterday, she woke up asking for another one today. I call this one Save the Whale because my ‘blue’ water turned out a sludgy purple so it looks like he is swimming in polluted water. Poor guy!

In honor of Earth Day, I decided to go entirely vegan with this lunch (except for the gelatin in the vitamin).
Our poor little fruit leather whale is swimming in yummy coconut milk yogurt dyed an odd sludgy purple with blue natural food dye. Other folks got a really nice color using the natural dyes so I think it was a weird reaction to the coconut milk (as opposed to dairy products).
Our vegan Earth Day lunch is finished off with a hummus and spinach reduce, reuse, recycle Earth surrounded by carrot sticks, a broccoli and almond cheese forest (the grass is almond cheese dyed green with natural food dye) and fruit flowers.

Earth Day Tree Hugger Lunch

I just love these, so many creative ideas in one place! So be sure to click on the button at the end of the post to see some great green, earthy, fun lunches! I posted an additional Earth Day lunch on Thursday, so you can hop on over there, then continue the hop with the button at the bottom of that post.
In honor of Earth Day, I decided to go entirely vegan with this lunch. I am curious to see how Cora reacts to vegan (almond) cheese!
We are all tree huggers in our family so I thought a tree hugging cutie would be a fun way to celebrate the day. The sandwich is cheddar style almond cheese quesadilla on whole wheat lavash and the girl is mozzarella style almond cheese with fruit leather and soy paper accents. Here is our cutie without her tree:
Our vegan Earth Day lunch is finished off with a hummus and spinach globe, whole wheat pretzel sticks, carrot sticks, pineapple flowers, raspberries and two little vegan marshmallow ‘clouds’
